Movers and Storage

Don’t underestimate the importance of this service, since a poor choice could mean you having to suffer damaged furniture. I have also read about people storing their items in the movers’ warehouse only to run into problems with the movers later and not be able to retrieve their belongings!

Some Google research pointed me to sites where I could enter my requirements and receive quotes/responses from various movers.  The responses I got were from movers I had not heard of, and did not inspire confidence (one with a home address) however. These could well be middle-men types.

In the end I obtained quotes from 5 providers. Most provided a quickie quote based on emailed descriptions (with pics), however Shalom Movers needed to have a sales exec visit my apartment to do a full assessment - which was quite a bother. I have used Shalom in the past, however their quote (which was a formal full quotation) was quite a bit higher than the others this time round.

I went with Yong Shen movers in the end, as their quote was competitive and as they also had storage facilities. Liaising with them was quick and no-nonsense. The movers were efficient, although pretty rough and there was some minor damage to a couple of my items. I am sure this is typical with all movers though, given the type of staff they hire (rough and ready men..). I did end up paying more than what was originally quoted however - they quote based on how much truck space would be needed, and I needed more than the half a truck initially estimated.

At the time of moving you will have lots of people going in and out of your apartment, so be careful to keep all your belongings secure. At the end of the whole process I found I lost my camera, however I really don't know where or how that happened.
